MS did own DOS
Digital Research owned the CP/M operating system.
CP/M ver 2.2 was as far as it went. MS had a version of basic (8k) is all.
DOS was purchased from a small software company the name I do not remember though it was not Digital Research. IBM discussed using CP/M 2.2 on its new as yet un released home computer with Digital Research. CP/M was pretty much at its limit of being upgraded, so IBM turned to MS. DOS and CP/M were both command oriented operating systems. MS DOS borrowed heavily from CP/M, and ending up with a much easier to use operating system.
MS DOS quickly took over the market. IBM DOS was sold with IBM products initially but later became available on retail level. DR DOS was a licensed copy of MS DOS, modified by Digital Research. Its market share never came near IBM DOS or MS DOS.
Many companies put their own version of DOS out. Compaq DOS,
HP DOS, etc... All were licensed copies of MS DOS modified for their respective systems.
