Microsoft is learning what Apple ...
... has known all along. Customers react much better to modest, incremental, change than they do to quantum leaps in technology. Every couple of years since 2000, Apple has asked customers to pay $130 for a new fully-supported version of MacOSX and customers have dutifully ponied up their $130 with nary a complaint.

Microsoft waits six years to introduce its newest OS release and offers a variety of choices from a $99 upgrade to a $499 full-featured retail package (in part because the courts tell them they HAVE TO) and a small number of customers rebel while a significant number are hesitant to move to the new OS.

Vista is an excellent product but it doesn't take much FUD for people to want to stick to what they know. For most of us, the unknown is just too damned scary.
