I agree that DRM is a ridiculous violation of consumer rights, but in the absence of any clear solution (except maybe suing the record industry), I think linux provides consumbers with a viable solution. It also sends a message that we will not tolerate it.

My point with DRM, particularly Region Coding of DVD's is that it has had the opposite of the intended effect. That is, people would rather purchase a cheap pirated DVD that they can actually play than purchase a so-called legal DVD that won't play because of Region Coding.

This is in fact the case here in Zimbabwe (of course there are a whole host of other problems for 'legal dvd's') but I have Mac friends and M$ friends that have purchased an official 'legal' DVD only to find that it won't play unless they change their region on their drive (which can only be done 4 times). So, they have resorted to buying the prolific (at least here in Zimbabwe) bootleg copies that don't preserve the region codes.

In short, the record industry and all the rest have contributed to their own demise with Region Coding. One can only speculate how other forms of DRM will also contribute to more 'piracy' since users have become so frustrated that they see no other option than to circumvent the 'law' (e.g. Tunebite DVDregionfree, etc.).
