New Life to old programs
The forced upgrade to newer flavors of Windows and and end to DLL hell should also be factored into the cost analysis. Likely businesses will save billions and not just millions with virtualization. For example, a working application that stops working owing to a Microsoft Windows update, need not be replaced by the new version of the application software. Instead virtualizaton of the Windows Operating system prior to the update will allow continued use of the older flavor of the application software, for as long as needed, on newer hardware, This is without introducing a security risk because the old operating and application software is running in a sandbox which can be replaced by a clone should it be infected.

So it is not only energy savings but also savings in application software purchase and preservation of in-house developed work that is involved. Disaster recovery, security, ease of maintenance and application of patches, testing and likely other cost savings are also involved. It would be great to see someone put together a full analysis. Is the cost savings 10 percent of the IT annual budget or is it more likely 25 percent or even more.
