I know very few non-enthusiasts that do OS upgrades. They simply wait till they upgrade hardware. This includes my mother, who use to install upgrades all of the time.

As for comparisons to Mac OS upgrades, that's a very different model. Mac hardware is outrageously expensive (compared to comparable PCs), while OS upgrades are fairly cheap.

OS upgrades for Windows are also fairly cheap (unless you want Ultimate, which is outrageously expensive), but as someone else pointed out, the average person can buy a new PC that's faster than what they have WITH the OS for 200-300 more. Might as well wait...especially, since Vista is clearly geared towards recent hardware (though if you bought a 200 dollar video card 2 years ago, you're probably good to go...I know my x800xl had no problems in Vista RC2).

The other problem for vista is that even with enthusiasts, there's not a compelling reason to upgrade. XP was a huge upgrade of Win9x.

this is more like Win95 to Win98.

Bottom line is all the gloom and doom over Vista was said about XP (and I do remember it very clearly).

Once SP1 rolls out, we'll see corporations start to move to the new OS.

When DX10 Games become worthy of the video card upgrade, gamers will go with the new OS. Might see similar things happen with the Home Theater crowd.

Bottom line is Vista will be in roughly the same position as XP when it hits 5 or 6 years old.
