- Migration?
-
I don't know that Vista's migration rate is going to increase all that much, certainly not to the level that "everyone will be on the same platform." I fully expect a small increase due to the number of companies that are simply waiting for a service pack before making the switch, but with SP3 due out for XP around the same time, I would think that many would rather stick with what works for another year or so before even thinking about upgrading.
There's no really big pull for anyone to switch to Vista at the moment, the hardware is only now starting to catch up to the requirements at reasonable prices, and Vista itself is still in the upper statosphere in terms of price (for any useful version that is). The only reason why this service pack might sell more discs is its 1GB download and 7GB disk space requirement. I know plenty of IS/IT admins that would rather have pre-patched discs than make sure every client machine has 7GB free for a patch that has to be done in the off-hours or risk bogging down the company LAN with 1GB of traffic per client being patched.
My advice, if you absolutely must run Windows and aren't running anything older than XP, wait at least 6 months or a year before switching. Chances are you will have upraded to a machine more suited to Vista and the number of "Vista only" applications will have grown to a level that better justifies the switch. In addition, any inconsistancies/instabilities introduced by SP1 (which there will undoubtedly be) will have been identified, worked around, or solved by then.
