It is patronizing to give a starving person chicken?
You know, if I was starving, I think I'd take the chicken even from the guy eating steak at his house. If I lived in BFE and someone offered me a crappy 7" hand cranked laptop that didn't play the latest game, I think I'd take it too, and be happy with it; and not care that they have a hot smokin' expensive machine at home.
It is NOT patronizing to offer cheap machines, when the fact that they are cheap allows me to offer them to 2 or 3 or 4 times as many people! The western world has been very guilty of being patronizing by offering the exact opposite of that; we have usually tried to make them fit OUR world, by offering big expensive solutions that often require them to take out loans at our banks which eventually lead to financial collapses and military coups. I live and teach in a rural area, and I would GLADLY take the leftovers from the big city schools, since it means I actually get SOMETHING!
I think those people this is meant to help would say the same thing.
