Slightly utopian, I think
While most of your comments are dead on, you're not 100%. At least not for Lovington, New Mexico; I can't attest for the rest of the country.

I don't recall anybody being left back. Comings and goings, some dropouts, but nobody seems to have been moved to a junior class. And this recollection is reinforced by today's web site. None of my former classmates show up in class of 1960.

There certainly weren't that many dropouts. Mandatory education to age 16. Come to think of it, that law was passed the year I started school; there was a 15 year old in my first grade class. We did lose some girls, through marriage; they weren't allowed to attend public schools.

Nope, no free supplies. Had to buy our pencils, tablets, etc at the same corner store where we got our candy, soft drinks and cigarettes. Got our booze by having braceros - today's illegal aliens - buy it for us.

Field trips? Well no, but thanks for this trip down memory lane.
