You're Missing the Point
This laptop isn't for little Johnny in the 12 room house next door. This is meant for the kid in some third world country where there may not be a teacher of any sort within 500 miles. Where electricity may not be commonly available. Where the parents may have had even LESS of an education that they currently do.

These kids will be most fortunate to see the word "cat" spelled out on a computer screen along with all of the words in their language and even in other languages. They will be able to see and understand the rest of the world outside of their remote villages. They will have an opportunity to improve their lives and their childrens lives. Imagine a kid learning multiple languages, advanced math and sciences and so much more, made available to him/her through this simple device. It blows the mind.

Of course, it is also going to depend on how these machines are distributed and used. If they are just handed out to the kids there won't be much of a benefit. But from what I have read there are going to be networks built around these laptops for educational purposes. The concept has been well thought out.

If Microsoft had any common sense they would jump on the band wagon and supply the operating system for free. Perhaps a stripped down version of Vista or just plain Vista basic. It's not like they are going to miss out on selling these kids a copy since they have no money (for now). But when they grow up, and if they have been educated with tools better than a stick in the dirt, they will want to buy a full blown laptop PC and Microsoft will recoup their expenses then. It could be more of an investment than they (MS) realize.

So before condemning the whole thing before it's even begun, why not give it a little support and a chance for the program to work. Perhaps some of your tax dollars may not end up in countries to support these people in the future. Think ahead a little bit.
