Jeremy, for once we are in agreement.
Mark this day on the calendar because I find I agree with you on both the hardware and how it will/should be used and what it's impact on the world will be, even if the goals are not fully met.

The truth here is that if we (we as a global society of human beings) can educate even one child then we owe it to ourselves to do so. As you suggest, nothing has more impact on poverty that does knowledge and eductaion. If we educate this one child, he/she goes on to educate others. As they say, a rising tide floats all boats evenly.

But I also see a machine like this doing much more than educating. Via the internet (even a slow connection) people from every corner of the planet can exchange ideas, customs, points of view, etc. I myself have formed solid personal releationships with people half a world away.

When that happens people begin to learn about others, the old "They/Us" walls fall to pieces. In a world more seperated by lack of understanding and fear of the unknown nothing could be more important than conveying the humaness we all share and dispelling the fear.

I don't really care if that is done with a laptop or smoke signals, as long as it happens...
