Think about it - the number one cell phone OS is Symbian, based on OS.

Actually not. Symbian is 100% home-grown proprietary to Nokia. But thanks anyway, Milly.

Think about all the Point of Sale devices, the majority of which run an embedded linux variant.

Split more or less equally between Linux and Microsoft, with a few percent of odds and ends like SCO Unix. But again, thanks.

What runs your local utilities? What runs your airport systems? What runs for your ground transporation such as trains? The list goes on and on.

Regardless of the platform, there are a lot of programmers employed producing code unique to those businesses. Never forget the under-appreciated DBA, for instance.

The report didn't contrast "proprietary" vs. "open source." It contrasted "software for sale" vs. "bespoke software" (to use a British phrase that lacks a concise American equivalent.)
