First off,
calling Vista a "debacle" is a bit quick to pull the lever, isn't it? You do realize there are many finding Vista to be a great OS. People seem to be irritated by it's hardware specs but they will be minimal and widespread specs in no time at all....like XP any views of it as a "debacle" will soon blow away with the wind and it will be another permanent part of the world's technology. I'm not sure if you've worked with vista but it offers a very powerful programming interface or runtime. I'm not so sure I understand about "local" programming. Do you have a grasp on how much custom VB6 code exists in the world today? You know, I'm not sure I completely understand open source sometimes. I understand the model, but where do they get the large numbers of programmers who have time outside of work and family to write code for free, and being that everyone is human, what's in it for them? Notoriety? Glamour....a standing in society? I'm not sure I understand that part. Even if I was inclined to write free code for a system I simply can't imagine finding the time. Work takes up most of every day to keep my family warm, fed and clothed.
