This makes me nervous.
This seems like yet another way to lock people into Windows, and I seriously doubt they'll make it fully open to open source.

I can just see the Microsoft board room meeting when they got this idea.

VP #1: "Hmm, JPG is an open and universal format, but we didn't invent it so it must be inferior...how can we ruin it and insert our own format that calls for the entire industry to be inconvenienced and all users to have to upgrade to something new?"

VP #2: "I know! Let's waste billions forcing our own file format down everyones throats and pretend we're going to make it available to everyone on any platform with any equipment, when in reality, we'll make it as frustrating as keeping a Windows PC from crashing!"

VP #1: "Excellent, make it so! Oh, and while you're at it, make sure to launch a very vague, corporate idea of artistic branding and an ad campaign that will confuse more people than entice. Be sure to add as many validation tools and other hurdles as you can to it too."

VP #2: "I'm on it."
