Games already support multiple DX versions
Believe me, gaming companies will start implementing DirectX 10 as soon as they can. Games are very competitive in trying to get the most out of their graphics. And gamers - especially the ******** - will want to get the the very best to show off their games with.

Believe me, game makers and gamers alike never play it safe. Pushing the limits is expected.

In addition, games have always been supporting older versions of DirectX as well. Valve's Source engine supports the latest versions of DirectX 9 all the way down to DirectX 7. When DirectX 10 comes out, I can guaruntee you they'll add DirectX 10 support to their engine, and their future games will take advantage of those improvements.

Why bother? Because you'll be eating the dust of your competitors if you don't.

The biggest reason why it may take a while is because of all of the code they have to write and all of the art they have to add for the new features.
