How does it make $$$$ now?
They aren't getting any dollars now. The JRE is a free download for Linux.

If they open source it at least they may get a few volunteers to prod through it and help debug it. Plus it kills off the current half-baked ones.

Finally having partly completed/partial capable (Half Baked) JREs being installed cost Sun dollars becuase Feature X from the shinny new developer tool won't run on it and they will blame Sun and not the JRE and Blog about how bad Sun's new development tools are thus effecting sales.

As I said --Blinders.
