Java components have always been "free" as far as I know. Anyone can download the JRE or even the full JDK from Sun. At issue here is the "potential" inclusion of the JRE with Linux packages. All along Sun has been basically giving away "Java", the only caveat I have ever been aware of has been the issue of who "controls" Java. Sun always has the stance that as "creators" of Java, they should maintain control over its "future". How does packaging Java with Linux affect Sun's overall stance as regards Java. IMHO the only thing of any concern here is the licensing framework which obtains with the Sun sanctioned JRE [packaged with Linux]. If Sun can get JRE prepackaged kudos to them, other than that I see nothing positive or negative about it.
You could always download JRE/JDK for Linux !!!
Of import is the license for "PREPACKAGING" Java with Linux!!!
If IBM or "other" of Sun's competitors can leverage this license to their own advanage, oh well.... - Posted by: IanX Posted on: 05/05/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
