Oddball should not make a difference
The support needs to be there, whether the manufacturer writes the drivers themselves or they open the specs up for third party developers to write drivers. The support needs to be there for the whole product range as well, not just one or two products out of a dozen.

I have a Mark of the Unicorn 828 Firewire audio interface. I do realize this may fall under the "oddball" hardware moniker being tossed in this discussion, but it makes a valid point. There are drivers available for Windows and Macs. They have no Linux drivers, and will not open the specs, for any of their firewire-based interfaces, yet there is Linux support for their USB-based interfaces. The MOTU 828 cost me $750, so to have cheaper devices support Linux and their top models not support it is a bit disserning.
