Manufacturers WILL supply drivers if we make it easy for them.
We need common binary standard for drivers accross ALL distributions, with backward compatibility. Manufacturers will NOT give up 5% of the market if we make it easy for them. They want to put one and only one Linux driver on the CD. Well, as with Windows, they have Win98, 2000, XP, so if they had to include two or three Linux versions, that is ok too, but best one new driver model ever 3 years or so, WITH backward compatibility. We also need a graphical interface for loading drivers from a CD or other media.

If we can do this, the Linux driver problem will go away so fast it will make your head spin. This is NOT the fault of the manufacturers. And, this will result in an immediate boost in desktop Linux usage. There are a ton of people out there that have tried Linux, but could not make all the hardware work and went back to Windows.
