No, it isn't enough, regardless of the CPU.
Is that fast CPU somehow getting data out of your hard drive faster? If you don't have enough RAM, that's what you are asking it to do, and you know darn well the HDD/IDE/SATA system is the bottleneck these days, and RAM is about the only way around it. The RAM holds your data where the CPU can access it without going to the slow hard drive chain. 512 MB is NOT enough to really cruise, unless you just don't multitask, do no major graphics, cad/cam or video, and never work with any large files.
Will 512 run Vista OK? Yeah, probably, but so what? It's not about running the OS, its about running an OS and the apps, all at the same time!
I'm sure a 3500+ with 512 MB of RAM could run circles around the P1 if you put WIn 95 on each.
But ask the PI to run Vista and see what happens.
Vista, all the Apps, and even our hardware have become bloated, look how many system hardware monitors we use now. All of that adds up, and the result is, it takes just as long to do most basic tasks now as it did 10 years ago. But the basic task is very different. To make the GUI look so nice, to do all the automatic spell check and grammar checks and broken text fixes, a computer is working WAY harder now than it did 10 years ago just running a word processor.

BTW, computers are not time saving devices, they are LABOR saving devices, everyone seems to get that confused.
