Yes, the chicken and egg thing. A little hard to overcome. But,
Microsoft can not hold back the flood waters forever. There are all of those fixed function desktops out there that can benifit first. But, the way into the enterprise is through first running open source apps like Firefox, OpenOffice, and Gimp on Windows for now. Kind of like the basketball player trying to hard, we need to let the game come to us and be patient about replacing Windows with Linux. Just focus on the basics of making desktop Linux better, and our time will come.

Another thing that would help would be an eclipse project for porting applications to Wine. This would make it much easier to target Linux with a native Linux/Wine version. But, that brings up the other ugly problem with Linux on the desktop: incompatible binaries. Hopefully Ian Murdock will be able to fix that at LSB, but without common binaries accross all distributions (including drivers), desktop Linux is a non-starter.
