>FYI Intel and AMD make *chips*, Apple and Dell etc make *computers*. Apple have changed the chip supplier and hence the hardware design.<
Point taken, that was my hastiness. I meant to say Intel and AMD based computers. However my point about PCs being ahead in terms processing power and hardware features still stands. Apple is still playing catch- up in these and many other areas(price to name one).
>Doesn't that depend on why you might want to switch? Not all switchers are concerned about the ultimate in graphics performance or whatever, some could conceivably be after a more stable OS or other perceived benefit.<
Maybe so but perception can only go so far when it comes to someone switching away from something that already works for them. With PCs being so cheap, Apple needs to produce something compelling enough to draw enough of a crowd away from Windows. I?m not talking about the ?fence-sitters? or Mac faithful but ******** Windows users. And Windows XP, in spite of it?s vulnerabilities and security issues, is still a very easy to use, compatible and stable OS so stability is a non-issue IMO.
>And when it comes to spending your cash (and time) where would you prefer to spend it? At the football match or patching and updating the anti-virus /anti-spyware / whatever<
This is a somewhat ridiculous statement. First of all a good security / antivirus suite (TendMicro?s Internet Security / Norton Internet Security / Mcafee Antivirus etc)usually run between $49-$100 and less for the yearly subscriptions. Considering what these suites do, the cost is more than affordable. And there are very good FREE anti-virus software and firewalls available. Second, updates on all of these are pretty much automatic (just like updates for Windows XP) and they can be scheduled to scan so apart from the initial time it takes to install and set them up there?s hardly any time spent actually using them unless it?s for an infection that slipped through which rare enough to not be an issue.
>Odd then that Apple's market share is increasing.<
The meager 3-4% market share they now hold isn?t something to be proud of. Plus the recent slight increase is being mostly blamed on the Mini Mac sales. There?s really little proof that people are actually defecting away from PCs. Apple?s numbers have been in the single digits for many years so it?s way too early to get excited about a little blip. - Posted by: darreno1 Posted on: 01/19/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
