Really? I hadn't heard anything about this. Can you point to
some source material that verifies this?

I think you're confusing things with Quicktime Pro, where the
Quicktime Pro 6 licenses had to be upgraded to work with
Quicktime 7. A big difference, since FinalCut is a $1000
program and a Quicktime license is $30.
