I guess my question is
What's your point? What is it you're trying to achieve with your posts? If it's not to disuade people from using Linux, then you might need to reword your posts.

Yes I am aware of that. But I do not think linux fanboys are aware of drafting packages.

Okay, you can't get AutoCAD on Linux. I get it. What does that mean? You weren't aware of Insight II, and you can't get it for Windows.

That sounds like custom software. Not too many copies of it exist. But we were talking about drafting packages.

It is not custom - not as many copies sold as AutoCAD, but still a bunch - pretty much every drug/biotech company has at least one copy.

And "we" were originally talking office suites, you brought up AutoCAD to counter someone's point, as I brought up Insight II to counter some points of yours.

I do have an open mind. I was wondering about you.

How is my mind not open? I use Windows systems far more than Linux systems, and I like things about both. I'm the one saying that one OS's advantages or software availability doesn't invalidate the other, but you seem to feel that AutoCAD clinches it for Windows. See the first paragraph if you disgree with that.

You have yet to answer the question as to why you have a problem with people running Linux. Who does it hurt? I say, run what you want - Windows, Linux, BSD, Apple's OSX - whatever works for you. What I get from your posts is, "AutoCAD isn't available for Linux - so you shouldn't switch to Linux for any reason." Somehow, to me, my attitude seems more open-minded than yours.

Are you sure? Sounds like you are. Don't worry about tomorrow in your skillset. Best way to learn is to jump right in. Learn FreeBSD. It is more organized and it is a descendent of Unix. The linux will be easier.

Thanks for the advice, but you again seem to miss my point. I'm not worried about my skill set, only trying to provide insight into my perspective (i.e., I'm not a Linux pro, and stand nothing to gain by the widespread acceptance of Linux).

It sure does have a long way to go. That short time is 14 years. Has it improved windows? Yes but only for corporate customers to leverage a better deal. Price remains the same in retail.

14 years since it's start, but I've seen dramatic improvements over the last few years, once it became more accepted in the mainstream and larger organizations got involved with the development.

As for pricing, that's a tough call. According to you, it HAS helped someone, even if it is corporate customers. You agree with me, Linux has helped people lower their costs for Microsoft software.

Also, you say the price remained the same at retail, but who's to say it wouldn't have gone up otherwise? Not to mention Microsoft's new focus on security and quality, so even if the pricing didn't change, we may still be getting a better product.

But let's just say that Microsoft didn't do anything, didn't adjust pricing or improve quality at all because of Linux - what's the problem with people using Linux anyway? Who does that hurt? In fact, according to you, the use of Linux has helped someone (corporate customers), so I don't see a down-side.
