Sigh....
Okay, I'm not even an anti-Microsoft guy here, and I'm getting frustrated - are you just trolling?

Hardware vendors made the drivers for Windows. Ask them why they do not do the same for linux. It appears most of industry ignores a small segment of the market.

Which directly relates to my original point - if more users start using Linux, more manufacturers will make Linux drivers. That in turn will encourage more companies to make Linux drivers, which will encourage more people to get Linux, etc.

I'm not saying this will happen quickly, and certainly not the way it's being handled now, but that's how things start. I had no problems getting Linux drivers for Samsung, HP and Ricoh laser printers, so it is starting.

I'm also not saying that everyone should just suddenly ditch Windows and go with Linux, I'm just saying that not having enough users to support a wide availability of drivers now is not proof that there never will be.

AutoCAD 14 will run on XP. AutoCAD is very good on a wide range of versions with Windows. You just will not be able to take advantage of the XP features. At $3300 it should. Then this encourages upgrades. AutoCAD will not run on CE or Tablet.

The compatibility info I quoted is from Autodesk (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2867935&linkID=4198944). According to this site, AutoCAD 2004 will run on the Tablet PC Edition.

And believe it or not, AutoCAD is not the only application people use. For example, Insight II from Accelrys only runs on SGI and Linux, so does that mean Windows is useless? Of course not. Constantly harping on the AutoCAD issue is only addressing a very narrow slice of the market.

Resist change and die! Changes are made thru customer feedback.

I'm sure Linux supporters would agree. If more people say they want to use Linux, people will start supporting it. You could change to Vista, which, from the info I've seen, requires new software and new drivers when not operating in emulation mode, or you could change to Linux (if it supports your needs) for less and still have the emulation option.

By the way that drafting package Pro/Engineer is $4900 so any saving moving off Windows is lost. It is more expensive.

That's assuming that security issues, patching, etc. are equal between the two OS's. TCO for each has been argued back and forth, but a few thousand more up front for one software package may be a small portion of the overall TCO, so that may not be a valid point.

And again, that's just one package. You can't get the Insight II package for Windows at any cost, so what does that tell you? Basically, nothing, other than that's what that developer knows and supports.

And what's wrong with people running Linux? How does that hurt Windows end users? As far as I can tell, it helps, as it provides Microsoft with competition, making them work harder to improve their products and compete on price and features. Why would you not want that to happen?
