yeah
Windows 98 was never intended for corp networks. That's what NT was for. Anyone using 98 for corporate networking is a sadist.

XP is not any better than Windows 2000 Pro. XP is basically the cartoon version of W2K. W2K pro is basically the combonation of what worked in NT and W98. Windows 98 was the bugfix version of Windows 95. Windows 3.1 doesn't even count as an OS. Let's not forget about the much heralded WFW 3.11. The only reason Windows 95 was any good was because 3.1 was so bad and hardware had made a monumental leap.

I will concede that AD is a nice feature, but that came out over 5 years ago. And it was a fix to the really messed up policy management in NT.

The point of all this is that competition on the hardware end of a PC has fostered inexpensive prices for significantly better products.

But with windows, we just keep getting even more expensive rehashed crap with the occasional improvement of something that was just plain flawed in the first place.

All software is imperfect. Only a monopoly like microsoft can get away with charging more because they want to keep the stock holders and bottom line happy at the expense of there customers who are stuck.

The main job of the OS is to run applications. windows has done that since day 1. If only it still just did that.

And if it was too expensive in the first place, the fact that prices haven't changed means nothing.

Windows is easier to maintain? Tell that to the millions of people who've been infected with a virus. If it was so easy, where did all those people go wrong? When windows 95 came out, I don't remember needing firewalls and spyware detectors and email scanners and IM protection and monthly updates and having to spend 4 hours disabling things to make the OS secure.

I wish my expectations were so low that I could be happy about more expensive Windows on the horizon.
