Agreed, if a company can get better returns for its shareholders by impeding progress and running a cartel then the management are duty bound to do that. Of course consumers (and smaller businesses) should be protected by governments implementing legislation to prevent such unfair trading practices.

I am less and less convinced that the most innovative companies win in the computer business (I've seen some very innovative companies go under). It is better for the computer industry to agree on a lowest common denominator standard that is easy to implement and requires minimal research and development costs.

I think we also ought to bear in mind that contrary to all the frenzied marketing gabble we are constantly exposed to innovation in the software industry is actually happening at a very slow pace indeed and real breakthroughs (rather than new gimmicks) happen very infrequently.
