The article is still pretty solid though...
Linux is a UNIX clone. Although they don't do as they should and standardize themselves in a UNIX style, atleast the idea of compatability is still there. Personally, I think the 2.6 Kernel will need a major overhaul to get back to the fundimentals of UNIX. The same reason I try to run FreeBSD over Linux.

OS X may compete with Red Hat who may compete with Solaris who may compete with Novell/SuSE, but they all compete with Microsoft, yet work with Microsoft to work within their environments. However, you can take Linux apps and port them to FreeBSD or Mac OS much quicker than you can port something over to Windows.
I personally thought that UNIX was only 40 years old, 2005 - 1965 = 40. But my math never was that good. However, one of Microsoft's main arguments against UNIX is that the OS is built on an archtecture that is over 30 years old and that NT was brand new and built from the ground up. However, UNIX has lasted the computing test of time as well as many other items that fail to die such as COBOL or C/C++ or Mainframes or AS400s. Anyone remember "SmallTalk?"

I willingly admit that I run about 20% of my work on UNIX/Linux, and that I do my best never to refer to Linux as a UNIX, but a UNIX clone. To do such would be an insult all parties and the work they did.

As for that 80%, well now that I have a Mac, it has been shrinking steadily, Mac just needs a tablet PC.
