You know full well what I meant. Microsoft uses upgrades to what should have been included/excluded from prior versions as a selling tool = forced upgrade. Windows 98 SE is a prime example. When the security chiefs at MS step on stage and say,"If you want security" blah blah blah, what is that but a forced upgrade?

Then using that same bit of logic, car companies should periodically make everyone bring their older cars back into the shop for their security upgrades - i.e. new air bag systems, OnStar type communication systems, LoJack, etc... And, of course, they should do it for free.

Back about 5 years ago, dual front air bags were "standard" but now, we've got full side curtain systems and so forth. So, now we're to expect that GM, Daimler/Chrysler, Ford and all the others are supposed to come up with the engineering to retrofit all vehicles with the latest in air bag systems? It ain't gonna happen. It would cost WAY too much money, time and effort to do it. Sure, it would be nice, but let's face it - the car IS 5 years old. Sure, it might possibly last for another 5 or even more years with proper care - oil changes, etc..., but it was designed - at the time - to be as safe as the law mandated at the time.

If you're going to drive a 5 year old car, you automatically have to assume SOME risks because it doesn't have the latest air bag system just as you did when you bought it. You CAN argue that the 5 yr old car SHOULD have come with side-curtain air bags, but they weren't invented at the time.

If you're not willing, then you should sell the old one and buy the latest and greatest. But NO ONE is mandating anyone to buy a new car. Sure, auto makers would LOVE you if you did - but they know it's not going to happen.
