MS does not innovate that much
MS does not innovate as you might think.

One of the things is that first to market hardly ever guarantees success. It is the companies that come after the early adopters that often win because they can 'copy' the technology and overpower the early adopters with their overall might. Microsoft is one of these companies. Hardly anything survives in its shadow because they have vast cash reserves and they can afford to try and try again.

Microsoft tries to keep its position by 'freezing time' and insisting that the PC is the key technology for everything in computing. They do not want to change a whole lot. Do not fix it if it is not broke!

They use their desktop monopoly to leverage any competition on that platform. They can afford to wait for early adopters to try different things and then they copy the technology and overpower the competition. Happened with web brosers, media players, network filesystems, and now firewalls and virus protection....
