Lot of freedom
If you are in the right group.

Otherwise you are free to starve to death with the lack of a social net.

http://www.ipsnews.net/fao_magazine/indian.shtml

According to the government's own National Family Health Survey, released in 2001, about half of all Indian children are chronically undernourished and half of all adult women suffer from anaemia.

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) says a fifth of India's billion people are ''chronically food insecure''. Dreze calculated that if all the sacks of grain lying in FCI godowns were lined up in a row, the line would stretch for a million kilometres --more than twice the distance from the earth to the moon.

India is in a pretty raw "raw capitalism" phase right now. It will take time for social nets to grow and slow them down.

But within the last few days I've read articles on the area which have people saying their life is over at 35 because they are unhirable ("too old").

Have to agree you are currently leaner and meaner than we are. The question is do we want to drop to those levels to win? If we do so, do we lose by winning?

But what is the cost of that intensity that accepts only the top students?

Teens in Southern India have the World's Highest Suicide Rates. by Kevin Caruso. The average global suicide rate is 14.5 deaths per 100000 people...

I believe whole heartedly that India and China should be come democratic capitalist countries that care more about a TV and a Car and less about killing someone over a disputed piece of land. They need to have enough to lose that they have something to lose.

I think that just like Japan things will improve enough so that the next generation of indians (maybe 2nd to next) are going to say "Screw this" and becomes "lazy" too.

As if working less than 60 hours a week and selling your life to a corporation is somehow a failing as a human being.
