See, I think you're looking at it too narrowly there.

Sure, you're right in that the dot-com boom exactly fit Greenspan's description of "Irrational exuberance" . .

However, it wasn't just isolated to California. Further, it had a severe ripple effect throughout the tech industry. I did not work for a dot-com, yet I still found myself on the unemployment line.

Further, are you telling me that there were absolutely no tech-related jobs in Michigan, or other states besides CA? And NONE of them got affected by the downturn in the economy?

Additionally, while it's only a minor issue, I object to "did those well-off Silicon Valley people buy automobiles from the Big 3?"

I'd reply "Didn't they? You mean they all fit the stereotype of buying European or Japanese cars? None of them bought a Corvette, or Viper, or Cadillac that they couldn't afford before?" You're globally applying a particular taste across the bulk of tech workers.
