Why don't we pay attention anymore?

"I can pay attention to both"

I've been saying for years that you're either doing email or you're doing work. But with precious few exceptions you're not doing both. You may be emailing about work, but you're not actually getting anything done.
And anyone who has ever tried to conduct a meeting and watched person after person "disconnect" from the meeting to take a cell phone call or type away on their laptop knows how much you have to repeat yourself to "reconnect" those individuals when it's their turn to speak. Are these people getting more work done than everyone else, or just slowing down everyone else and distracting form the main work at hand?
When your mom told you to turn off the TV and focus on your homework, she was right. Email, IM, cell phones etc and just workplace versions of the livingroom TV. Yes you can work with them on, but you're absolutely not being more productive.
Not that we needed fancy terms to know this!
