It's not that new
In the 60s, one standard line in the cartoons was "You can be replaced by a button". Somehow the economy and employment managed to struggle along for the last 40 years.

In the Viet Nam era, it appeared that society was tearing itself apart at the seams, and I saw little hope for the future. Yet we survived.

This is not Polyanna trying to refute what you are saying. Personally I don't see the way out either. Only hope that the self-healing powers of this democratic, capitalistic society once again comes through.
