That's not what caused the crash
This is what caused it.

People who knew nothing about technology invested huge sums of money in an idea. An investment they hoped would make them instant millionaires. Basically they gambled a lot of money and few won while most lost. You can do the same at Vegas.

People saw instant millionaires made from investing technology. They didn't invest wisely. This large rush of cash employed many and fueled huge unstainable growth. All the big corporations enjoyed the carefree spending. In the end it was just a bunch of people willing to take money from others who didn't have clue what they were doing.

Now add to this the Y2K spending the was going on and you have huge sum of money. Y2K passed uneventful and the investments showed no returns. Then BOOM the tech crash happens. So all this artificial demand that had colleges pumping out tech in 6 months had flooded the work market. People were used to getting paid obscene wages and now they couldn't find work. Basically back to reality. Econmist predicted this would happen in back in 1998 and they were right on the money.
