Re: Consistancy
"First you argue that open source is not producing any change in the popularity of Office...

...Then you say:
You need to get a clue and get ready for the brave new world. It is different every day than it used to be.

You're arguing that the best result for those working on/with proprietary software is the complete failure of open source to displace it. How could I disagree with that?"

No. My point is that OSS will always coexist with Proprietary Software. It has been like this from the beginning. Very early, OSS was dominant, then we had a long period of the dominance of PSW. I would look at the current market and say the tides are not really changing. There are some places OSS is making their inroads, but I have not seen a single comapny go broke due to the slight upsurge in OSS.

We see a number of markets where new technologies are moving in and shifting the paradigm. I see this in software as well. The paradigm is shifting, however, it is enough to offer choice, but not likely enough to supplant the major players.

In the end, there will always be those who favor Ford over Chevy, GE over Whirlpool, Honda over Suzuki and PSW over OSS. There will also always be the opposite. The interesting thing is that these are the fringe people. The vast majority just want something that works.

Something that works is defined a lot of different ways. I am in the IT trade. For that reason, there are a number of tools that are important to me that I will gladly pay for. There are others just as good that I get for free. For a non-IT professional, something that works may be being able to buy a $500 computer without also buying $3000 worth of new software. 90% as good for a lot less expenditure may be the perfect niche.
