So if people aren't following the philosophy as it's laid out and simply assume that free software must be given away with no concerns for how they'll earn money then that's their own fault.

Those companies did not fail because they followed a free software strategy. They failed because they had NO strategy. They assumed that if people came that money would fall out of their pockets. You need to give people a reason to part with their money while giving them (or selling them) free software, like Red Hat and IBM do.

And before you start implying that they are benefitting off the work of others who volunteer their time, remember that those are two of the biggest open source contributers (if not THE two biggest). They pay employees good money to contribute to free software (probably the same that MS's proprietary programmers make), and they earn the money back by selling and supporting free software. So it's not like they are sitting there waiting for people to volunteer their time to finish a project. They are more than willing to pay a fair price to have the project done, and done the way they want.
