I wouldn't go that far
Certainly, the days of IT wine and roses is over. You're very unlikely to get paid $50k straight out of school for any sort of IT job, unless you have demonstrable real-world experience. However, the age of commodity computing is still far off, and may never come for most businesses, who will still need competent people willing to put in the time, blood, sweat, and tears to get and keep critical systems running. That's not something you can get any Joe Blow off the street to do.

As long as there's information technology, there will be a need for competent, skilled IT workers. However, it has been and probably will continue to be a game that's half skill, half luck. Going into IT is a risk, but if you work hard and play your cards right, you can succeed.
