Yes it is so bad...

You are misinformed. Forcing developers to work until 4am is the worst thing that you can do. It goes to show you that you have a failed development process, and working tons of overtime is the cheap way of fixing the failed development process. In fact, it doesn't fix the failed process at all. It doesn't work. Having a balanced life makes a happier and more productive employee. Those developers from India and China don't "*****" all day - and guess what? They won't tell you when there are problems that you need to know about. They won't tell you when your software design is flawed. They won't tell you when there are better ways of developing software. They will just accept the "status quo" and live with it, without seeking to change things for the better. As one manager who was disgruntled with his Indian developers put it, "The Indians were polite and agreeable. Unfortunately, 'polite and agreeable' was not what we needed." If developers work until 4am, they won't have the mind to innovate.

Your post goes to show how immature and inexperienced your "work until 4am" developers really are. Force them to work a more reasonable schedule and they will be forced to improve software development processes instead of trying to "plow through the problems", so to speak, instead of trying to solve real problems.
