No nice way to lay off
There is no nice way to lay off someone. Even if you give the layoff notice in person on a gold platter it is still a layoff notice. In the case of a mass layoff such as this one, where the individual's performance was not the most important reason for the layoff a letter fedex'd to the home is reasonable. It saves a lot of pain it would otherwise cause to the manager who has to inform the employee that's getting laid off. Remember, the manager may be getting laid off too.
