Heres a chart that illustrates Oil Addiction
http://www.efn.org/~patrickb/grf.jpg

The above population chart, illustrates that human population is "in vertigo" as the U2 song would say. It will "make us kneel alright" as we pray for alternatives soon. The peak oil chart below

http://peakoil.org/images/peak_oil_big.jpg

illustrates why. Even if the actual oil peak is at 2020, on a "per capita basis", we humans are already consuming more energy per person than anytime in history..and growing. We've built into our system "energy growth dependence". So, coupled with human population growth "peak oil per capita" has probably already occured unless we break out of our oil addiction. "Per capita" will be in a decline as population rises. How will we sell those iPods and tech gadgets to a growing third world to sustain markets if this gets any worse and as we compete for limited oil reserves left? Where will we make plastics from? Coupled with Co2 greenhouse gases, we'll continue to erode the global environment as we consume and extract what oil we can find. Big oil discoveries are probably over. We've pin pricked this ball we call earth to the point that we've limited our options for human sustainability. A brick wall high speed carbon based automobile crash (without air bags) would be an appropriate analogy.
