Did someone say "Geologist?"
Its nice to be able to exercize my geological talents here (since I can't make a living off of them). That Egyptian desert zone dissapeared around 8000 years ago (5000 BC) - and it was a tropical zone from the end of the last Ice Age (10,000 yo, 8000BC).
There are an interesting chain of events that happened around 5000 BC. A LARGE methane store in the north sea "degassed" (it was frozen on the bottom), and the average temp shot up like 11 degrees in a year. This was around the same time that the "biblical flood" was purported to have happened - the Med. sea breaking through the bosphorus and flooding the (then) fresh water Black Sea. I'm working on the details, but it seems like some interesting history!
As for man being behind global warming - CO2 levels were higher when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth - and the Earth was WARMER! Duh! All that CO2 and heat created conditions for many swamps with lots of plants and animals. Those swamps were eventually "covered" over the ages and slowly turned into oil. Yeah, you should know this already. Anyway, after the dinos were hit by an asteroid/comet, the Earth moved into sequences of Ice Ages - which ended (above). Today, we are taking that oil, and burning it and putting CO2 back into the atmosphere. When all the oil is gone, then all the dinosaur-era CO2 will be back in the atmosphere, and DUH! the world will be just as warm as when the dinos ruled. PRETTY DAMN SIMPLE. What don't you get?
