I agree 100% with the point you make. Unfortunately,
mankind has become a very "short term" oriented people. The potential for such an investment to pay off is to far in the future to interest the venture capitalist. And the current energy industry sees a few hundred years of oil reserves already discovered so they will let their great, great gand children worry about finding an alternative. So if we expect any push to find alternatives to fossil fuels, the government will have to make the search for such payoff in the present time.

In 1975, about the time a gallon of gas went from $.25 to $.50 a gallon, a carbeurator was invented and patented which provided 50+ miles a gallon fitted on a full size Impala (a big car by today's standards). It's inventor spoke of the good it would provide to the public. That was until he was offered a large sum of money from a major oil company for his patent. Suddenly, his honorable intentions were nowhere to be found and his true colors showed through; GREEN.

When the first major, trumped up oil shortage took place about the same time, there was a big push to find an alternative energy source. As soon as the oil shortage was debunked, that push died on the vine.

And last but not least, one of man's saddest statements about who he really is and what is his makeup, is the cancer research industry. Yes, it is an industry. One which has become so lucretive for the researchers that finding a cure would be a devistating blow to their means of sustance(if a cure were found, hundreds of thousands who make a living in this area would be out of a job)that you can be assured a cure will never be found.

So in looking at mankind and his general unwillingness, plus he has to eat, to work without the promise of instant reward, that leaves but one entity to persue and provide incentives for others to persue an alternative energy source. Of course, having oilies in the white house(and I'm not bashing anyone, just stating a fact) is definitely not encouraging where alternative fuels are concerned.
