intellectual capital
While the downward trend for good foreign students to choose US institutions has implications for us on many fronts, including social, trade, international standing, possible growing isolationism; I'd like to add a comment on just the growth of intellectual capital in the USA. We are losing on two fronts, one being the loss of top intellectual abilities from overseas and the other the lack of our ability to produce equally sharp high school graduates in any numbers here. To remain internationally competitive our public schools must become more rigorous and streamed. I have direct experience with overseas (French) schools. The classes are no nonsense and it shows in SAT, IB and other results. I think we have become too soft and academic capabilities have been looked down upon in our schools. The evidence shows up at our universities where the first couple of years cover material most overseas students had in high school in many cases.
