I think the author should get some better numbers
Quoting sources such as Monster.com seeing a rise in IT postings is not a good way to judge whether the IT industry is hiring again. These figures don't take into account the numerous recruiting companies posting false jobs.

"That, coupled with the lower unemployment rate, suggests that some techies left the field, possibly discouraged by grim job prospects."

The above statement is very true. Many people, because they couldn't find employment in the IT industry, have gone to other fields. Many taking huge paycuts just to earn enough money to buy food and pay rent/mortage. These people, would be more than willing to go back into the IT industry should the market pick up, but its not.

Also, coupled with the fact that the bogus job postings on most job boards has people in the IT field discouraged from applying for those positions. It used to be that when you applied to a position, you got some type of feedback from a human being. Now your lucky if you get an automated letter letting the applicant know their resume was received.

"Diane Berry, an analyst at research firm Gartner, goes so far as to predict a shortage of technology professionals in the United States in the near future, thanks to factors such as declining student interest in the tech field. "Within the next three to five years, the labor problem in IT (for example, unemployment) will reverse course, and there won't be enough IT workers in the United States to satisfy the demand," Berry said in an e-mail."

People making statements like this are going to fuel an IT job shortage in the US. Many companies are going to see a quote like this and decide why even try to hire in the US. I'll outsource to India or China, get cheaper rates and lets face it, these people get a "free" eduction or a reduced fair education as the Gov't pays for the majority of it, and they are the two most populous countries in the world so the supply is huge!

The author should contact companies like SAS and BearPoint and see for every programmer they hire in the US, how many are they outsourcing?
