You don't get charged for incoming SMS messages... Only the ones that are from 'services', like sports alerts, etc. That's how you pay for it. But from one friend to another, only the sender gets charged (and that includes international).

True in Europe, not in the USA. T-Mobile and Verizon I know personally, others by conversations with people I know.

SMS is a huge revenue generator (as TFM mentions) and part of that is that the carriers charge subscribers for spim that the subscribers can't refuse and can't turn off.
