- For all the anti-Linux whiners...
-
There's nothing in the article that says which jobs IBM is moving. The closest thing is about the company IBM is acquiring, which does transaction processing and telemarketing. Doesn't sound like Linux to me. We have no way of knowing until more information is found out.
I'm not happy about jobs moving overseas. But it is patently dumb to suggest it is due to Linux. Get off your lazy butt and learn Linux so when your company adopts it, they won't have to offshore to find the skills. Every IT professional should be comfortable in two operating systems anyway - for the sake of your own marketability, if not for sheer utility on the job.
If we want to keep the jobs here, it's time for us in the field to break out of our complacent, whiney attitudes and start leading the world again. It starts with personal character. Americans have become soft and self-indulgent, and have an entitlement complex going on.
Linux is not the source of job losses. Executive greed and shareholder pressures are. Worker complacency and character are, in some cases. The much-touted "globalization" movement endorsed by our politicians is also responsible. Where are the benefits of the WTO? NAFTA and GATT? Microsoft is also exporting jobs, not just IBM and Linux. See past Linux and look at the real causes. Then do something about it. This is especially possible if it means personal changes - those are something you can do something about. - Posted by: techboy_z Posted on: 07/30/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
