Speaking up for "Consultants".
Read my post above, there is a very clear difference between contract labor (coders/engineers) and consultants. Having been at the consultant game for more years than I care to count I have seen far to many times when a contract laborer is mistakenly hired as a consultant.

When I walk into one of my clients offices as a consultant I have one goal and only one goal, to make/save my client money that is taken straight to the bottom line. If I can't show a bottom line improvement then there is NO REASON for my being there!

Many, MANY times I've been called in to talk with clients about some new project or idea only to talk them out of it and costing myself some $$$ in the process. I don't begrudge it a bit because I know that if I can keep my clients profitable then I can sell them my service at a later date and will be welcomed with open arms in the future.

Its for this reason I don't have to drum up new clients constantly and have no fear in handing a new client a list of satisfied customers for them to talk with as a reference.
