This article completely confuses issues
I've been a consultant a long time and the fundamental problem isn't the consultants.

The two key issues are:

- Consultants and Contractors are two very different things but consulting firms selling them the same way and companies get ripped off as a result.

- Contractors get over paid and called consultants and yet they don't offer any more knowledge then the in house staff.

- Consultants (true consultants) that spend countless hours researching, taking courses, studying, writing exams etc...get treated like the 'contractors' by the consulting firms and eventually say, what the hell...why bother to do all the extra work when Joe contractor next to you knows nothing and gets paid the same or more.

The fundamental problem is the fact that the IT industry not regulated properly and the differentiation between a contractor and consultant just isn't there. Contractors are over paid, consultants under paid and in the end the customer loses and so does the consultant.

My two cents is, its about the IT industry regulates consulting, stops the consulting firms from ripping off the consultants and the customers. (meaning pay the consultant $80 per hour and charge the customer $325). And contractors be sold as contractors and consultants sold as consultants.

So the Article title is WRONG! Contractors that are paid as consultants and sold that way are a complete waste of money. Consultants are definitely worth the money and sorely underpaid.
