There are times when consultants are useful, primarily when the task is well defined and the necessary expertise is not already in house, but they are overused, as is outsourcing in general (I say this even though I do a fair amount of consulting work myself). On the whole, a firm's own employees are far more interested in its long term success than outsiders ever could be.
