What you are talking about is old history. Java was supposed to be a write once run any where environment. That goal still has not been achieved so really you could say Microsoft didn't do anything out o the ordinary with it. Microsoft is promoting java, follow this link:

In there you will see plenty of references to Sun's Java. That sure looks like promotion to me. Now tell me who is out of touch?
